DIEP Flap Breast Reconstruction Illustration
Medical Illustration by Kyle Ockerman, University of Florida College of Medicine
My name is Kyle Ockerman and I am a third year medical student at UF college of medicine. Breast reconstruction was what initially drew me to plastic surgery, so I wanted to create an illustration of one of my favorite breast reconstruction, procedures, the DIEP flap.

Reflections of My First Encounter with Plastic Surgery
Article Review by Parul Rai, University of Texas Medical Branch
The summer after my freshman year of college, I embarked on a surgical mission trip to a remote town called Pignon, located in the direly medically under-resourced Central Plateau region of Haiti. Through most of our cases, we addressed conditions that were especially debilitating due to a longstanding lack of medical care, including hernias and malignant thyroid tumors...which is why I was perplexed why we were going to do a cleft lip repair during one of my last days of the mission. Wasn’t this “just a cosmetic procedure,” after all?
But my perspective quickly shifted once I met the patient her family myself. This procedure would transform the trajectory of this two-year old girl’s life in terms of her self-image, how her peers would treat her, whom she’d marry... This was the day that forever changed my perspective on plastic surgery.
Below are photos I captured on my mission to Pignon.
